You're Gone

Late summer wind
saying goodbye
but can't shed a tear
from my weary old eye
the asphalt is hot
its burning my feet
and i'm running to say
what i couldn't last week

but you're gone
you're out of my sight
missed my chance
yes you're gone
without looking back
not a glance
yes you're gone

early october
and it's been some time
but not long enough
for what i've left behind
i'm begging the lord
and all the stars too
to send me something
to take my mind from you

cuz you're gone
you're out of my sight
far from view
yeah you're gone
So goodbye
to what i once knew
yeah you're gone

And now it's december
the end of the year
and i'm looking ahead
and a whole new frontier
i'm lighting a candle
and trimming the tree
and hoping that far away
soon I will be

And finally it's spring
it arrives late in may
the daffodils bloom
and i pick a bouquet
Set them on the table
in an old plastic vase
finally some life
in this haunted old place

yeah you're gone
you're out of my sight
far from here
yeah you're gone
I’m counting
each month of the year
Since you’ve gone
out of my sight far away
yeah you're gone
i'm learning just why
you didn't stay
yeah you're gone

Starry Sea

Row row boat down foggy stream
Night time is here a winding dream
And into outer space my soul
swirling rivers a dark black hole

Sailing away past the stars
In my bed I float
Sailing away starry sea
In my row row boat

and all the angels and the saints
draw the heavens with magic paints
i travel here each quiet night
between the stars of brightest light

sailing away past the stars
in my bed i float
sailing away starry sea in my row row boat

cross the heavens fast i ride
wave hello to those who've died
they smile and wave right back to me
what a funny mystery

sailing away past the stars
in my bed i float
sailing away starry sea in my row row boat

Happy Little Tree

i work in the afternoon
and evening i have free
scrape against my window
something it beckons me

a happy little tree
wants me to leave this place
to run and find the sun
and feel it on my face

in an old box of papers i
found a letter torn
bears witness that i once said
i wish i's never born

but this happy little tree
wants me to say hello
to run and find the sun
before i ever go

I work in the afternoon
and the evening i have free
thank god for this little friend
this happy little tree

Earl Grey

In the kitchen, kettle's on
a pot of Earl Grey tea
i'm gonna stay awake all night
talking quietly to nobody
writing lot of bad poetry

In the basement paper and pen
in the cool and musty damp
I'm gonna be awake all night
Microphone and buzzing amp
by the light of an oil lamp

I'm tracing maps and bending routes
and memorizing codes
And I'm digging now a tunnel
underneath the fields and roads

Is there a place beyond the sun
And it's daily promised threat
To leave me in the darkness here
with old diaries and cassette
work not finished yet
accordion and clarinet
words to music need to set
some of it i should just forget

Night Walk

Along wooded trail at night
I heard an owl call to me
I knew that was being watched
From a silhouetted tree

The moon cast a icy light
And I thought that I might freeze
I wanted so to float away
Beyond the reaching of the trees

Fallen angels and shackled ghosts
Royal feasts and drunken toasts
The darkness fell a heavy cover
Pressed me down and pulled me under

It's all a graveyard late at night
Where lost spirits call to me
It echos from a world unseen
From some lost eternity

A battlefield, a smiling beast
A crying doll, a wandering priest
The darkness fell a heavy cover
Pressed me down and pulled me under

I saw them there in that dim light
From behind a kind of veil
Their images are carved in stone
Somewhere on that wooded trail

Never See You Anywhere

there’s dust upon the lens
there’s spots upon the mirror
there’s a hole in the bucket
and cracks in the veneer

I said that I was leaving
and that i needed change
but i've stayed right here
And here everything's turned strange

And I never see you anywhere,
and i've searched all over town
I never see you anywhere
But can you tell that I’m around?

i'm on the swing-set waiting
rocking back and forth
there is a cold wind blowing
coming from the north

I know that i'm not alone
And that a ghost is lurking near
i've seen pictures in the paper
And heard stories that you’re here

the streets outside are empty
a storm is moving slow
there's a black cloud in the distance
that threatens all below

there's a setting at the table
a plate and fork right here
and i fill your cup each night
in case you might appear

My Little Red Heart

Up in the clouds
i watched my heart float
and hit the ceiling
and fell and broke
into a million pieces
on the ground there
such a mess
and so unfair

my little red heart
boom boom it bust
my little red heart
has been crushed

up in the sky
like a red balloon
my heart soars
toward the moon
but got messed up
in electric wire
exploded and
turned into fire

my little red heart
boom boom bang crash!
my little red heart
gone in a flash

My little red heart
boom boom bang crash!
My little red heart
turned to ash

My lost little heart
Always achey and sore
'tis good little thing
I don't have it no more

I got a new little heart
made of steel
And it won't ever break
or need time to heal

My little red heart
Filled with hope
My little heart
Can finally cope

My little red heart
no more defeat
My little red heart
boom boom it beat!

Fly Away, Little Birdie

fly away little birdie, into the sky
above all the earth, soaring so high
fly away little birdie, just doing your thing
you got the breath of God under your wing

im here down below
hands in the dirt
coughing and scratching
aching and hurt
and i see you fly
in the clouds above
i get all chocked up
and full-up with love

i'm here down below
bending and scrape
moaning and crying
in an awful shape
and i see you perched
top the tallest tree
and i think maybe someday
that bird could be me

i'm here down below
choking and sweat
barely hanging on
and deep into debt
and i see you fly
in the heavens so blue
and i think maybe someday
i could do what you do
